Support for Apple Family Sharing

It would be amazing if there was an option to share Hardcover Supporter status via Apple Family Sharing. My partner is a much more avid reader than I am. As a family we would like to support the great work y’all are doing but would prefer not to pay twice for the two of us.

Selection Lag

When selecting a page within the app, the page is not focused until it is loaded. This feels unresponsive. Pages should be focused and then loaded.

Series status (user)

Similar to how books have a status (want to read, reading, dropped, finished), it would be nice to have user statuses for series.

That way I could track which series I'm reading, or dropped

List Carousel

It would be super cool when working within lists to have an back/advance arrow that would take you to the main page of the last/next book on the list without having to exit out of the book's main page, back to the list, then into the book's page, back to the list, and so on. Not just for my own lists, but the curated ones that are featured in the browse section as well. being able to advance all the way down the main pages of the Hugo award winners and seeing their details instead of their "at a glance" info would be amazing imo.
(i of course am no programmer and cannot imagine what kind of work would go into that). Thank you!

"Load more" button placement

It would be useful to have the load more button (and also previous button) at the top of a book list. When going through read books or want to read books, these cannot be searched by name, and sorting by title can be time consuming if the books you're looking for are at the very end, since you will need to go to the bottom of the page to load the next page on the list. Easier navigation for lists would be more useful when editing many books in a list or when double checking for a specific book.

Upvoting or downvoting recommendations

On the https://hardcover.app/recommendations/0 page, it would be nice to be able to upvote or downvote recommendations to help improve future results and fine tune what gets recommended to you

Name Romanization

The ability to assign name romanzations to authors, for example, オダトモヒト's author page in English is "Tomohito Oda" which is considered romanization of a name. This feature would allow a user to prefer romanized names, or their Japanese original names, which would then be shown, or to have both shown, for example, Tomohito Oda (オダトモヒト) or オダトモヒト(Tomohito Oda)

Public tag/genre voting

Add the ability for any user, not just librarians and supporters, to suggest a tag for a novel from a preset list, then people can upvote/downvote the tags if they think they apply
if it falls bellow a certain threshold it is removed/hidden and if it reaches above a certain amount it is shown on the novel page, not just in the vote page

Control over what does and does not go into our feeds

I would like the option to choose what does or does not go into my feed.

Specifically I don't want my List activity going into my feed. I use lists for organizational purposes and that activity just makes things messy.

I would like to be able to limit it so only my status changes (Want to read/Currently Reading/Read/etc), ratings, and reviews) go into the feed and everything else is left out.

I really don't want to have to manually go through my feed removing those entries every time I make a change. That's a pain.

Add a wishlist status or allow custom statuses

On Goodreads I have a custom exclusive shelf (status) that I call a wish list. These are books that I am interested in but have not bought or borrowed from somewhere.

Right now I am trying to track this by making a wishlist List, but I still have to assign it a Status so it goes on Want to read. But this means these books are mixed among the books I do have.

What happens is that I scroll through my Want to read books and there is no indication which books I have and which ones I don't. I then have to go into each book to look and see if its on that Wishlist list. Its annoying and frustrating and I find myself returning to Goodreads over and over since I can easily to this there.

I'd love to have this functionality here on Hardcover as well.

Files transfer option from Bookmory

Hi! So, I've been using Bookmory for about four years now and I don't need to tell you how much bookish storage I've got in there 😅 I really love the app, but I've found Hardcover by accident and I truly believe it has got potential to become my new fav book tracking app (sorry Bookmory). The only thing that keeps me away from this promising app is that it has got the option to transfer files from Storygraph and Goodreads, but not from Bookmory. Is there any way to change that?

Universe Tag

Spoken about this with @Govind.

A "Universe" tag that can be added to books to show that they are part of a given Universe rather than a 1000 book unordered list that groups them all.

Having a Warhammer 40K list is nice in principle, but it doesn't half mess up any meta data pulls I do into Booklore or Calibre, If the actual series that book is a part of isn't the featured or 'top' series it isn't seen (Of course that is an issue with metadata files only supporting 1 series, something I am thinking about trying to fix with an updated format).

In reality Warhammer series can be broken down into groups and then reading lists.

For example the Horus Heresy is a major canonical event. Which has multiple internal series such as The Horus Heresy: Primarchs and The Horus Heresy: Characters and even the Horus Heresy it self can be broken into multiple lists (https://www.kylebb.com/HH/HHSeriesOrder.jpeg) (It's pretty ridiculous, how ever I don't think this request should go that far really) it is then followed on by the major event The Scourge. So in the case of Warhammer, these major events would be the Subgroups that @Govind has spoken about. + another grouping at the end to collect misc books that are not really part of the timeline or a series, but are part of the Universe e.g supplementary material so that series lists arn't taken up with multiple extras.

This extends to something as simple as Dune in my opinion, where there is a Prequel, main, sequel and branching books.

Star Wars simply goes without saying... there is alot.

List could go on and on.

So in Summary:

  • A Universe Tag to show a book belong to a Universe such as Warhammer 40K to avoid messy lists.

  • A Universe Page, which is editable by Librarians/Admins only (to stop people from changing it to their preferred order). Could contain lists which are tagged as Universe. So that we can create Canonical lists of reading lists. User's own reading lists could appear at the bottom.

  • Universe Tag would appear as a Golden Tag between Book cover and first series affiliation.

  • Universe page would also have a horizontal scroll of the Authors of the series (Order by number of books they wrote? or by most recently published?)

  • Universe tag would also be the first tag attached to a book so that metadata pulls can also have some kind of link between books. At the minute it is very hit and miss, especially when filling in the gaps with other meta data providers.

Don't display series an author isn't a contributor to

On the Series tab of an author page, currently series are being included by other authors if both authors have published stories from their own series in the same anthology. For example, Brent Weeks has Moorcock's Elric, Hobb's Elderlings, and Canavan's BM series listed - despite also saying he has 0% authored in the series. If we could only show series where the author has >0 authored it would clean up some display cruft.

Author page contribution classifications

As it stands, all books to which an author is a contributor are counted on their author page under the default Books tab.

Exceptions are when a book is marked as a compilation (this show under the confusingly named "collections") or if the contribution is something other than Author (eg. Narrator). These are counted, but aren't actually listed at all. Meaning that on contributor pages of folks who only narrate books, you'll see blank lists.

I suggest that Author pages have the following tabs: Books, Collections, Contributions, and Series.

Contributions would contain any narrated works, forewords, introductions, illustration/photo, etc. while the Books tab would be strictly the Author's own, primary works.

The result being a much cleaner browsing experience.

Series slug cardinality
In progress

There is currently no cardinality in series slugs, meaning books by Felicia Day in the series "The Guild" will take you to the series page for "The Guild" by Tate James. (They are not the same thing)

I've finished this book button

I think it's possible others have mentioned this but goodreads has a really nice feature where you can press, "I've finished this book!" when you're done reading it which is super satisfying. Right now hardcover only allows you to change your book status from currently reading to read, which is a bit anticlimactic. Give me a button to push! :)

Edition Edit Language Type Text Entry

As a librarian,
I want to be able to type to search the edition dropdown when editing an edition
So that I can find the language I am looking for more quickly and with less scrolling (save my fingers :)).

Progress bar on currently reading book

In the “Currently Reading” books, I would LOVE to see some reflection of my book progress based on my updates. This was something extremely motivating about Goodreads although their UI is garbage beyond that.
This progress ban can be made much smaller than the Goodreads one; maybe even just a simple line at the bottom of the book cover that fills up in the primary color to indicate how far along you are, or a progress circle that fills up as you get further along.

I’m a UI/UX designer/developer. Would be happy to help out wherever to help get this feature live asap. It’s the only thing keeping me stuck in Goodreads. I absolutely love Hardcover’s overall look and feel and the social feature are well thought out!🏆

Collects/Collecting Tab

On a book that is an anthology or collection, there should be an additional tab which lists the books included in the book. The list will then act as link outs.

'Owned' as property as opposed to list

On Goodreads I use four mutually exclusive lists; the default three, and 'owned-unread', so that books I own but haven't yet read are visually distinguished from other books I want to read. I'd love if owned was just a property like a checkbox I could filter in/out within 'want to read' though, seems a lot cleaner. It was also super laborious to tag everything as owned - could you possibly implement something during import that maps a given Goodreads list to Hardcover's 'owned' list (or property)?

paste isbn to switch edition

When viewing my lists/shelves (e.g. 'read'), some of my Goodreads imports are the wrong editions (perhaps because I added them to Goodreads using their asins, and the corresponding goodreads ID lacked an isbn). I'd like to have an option to paste in an isbn to switch editions while browsing editions in the pop-up window in list. Many thanks, and love the site!

Mobile app gets stuck on a white screen
Planned

Sometimes after re-opening the app on mobile (iOS and Android), it will get stuck on a white screen.

We are aware of this bug, but it's been a bit difficult to try and narrow down a root cause.

The current workaround is to close the app and re-open it.
