Has this not been done already? I just followed a bunch of authors. If you don't updates on new books, what does that do?

That's a good question Erin - the ability to follow authors, series etc is currently a bit of a foundational piece of functionality we have added in that doesn't do too much yet, other than show up in the Network tab on your profile (so I suppose you can think of it like a bookmark feature).
The series you follow do show up on the Series Tracker labs feature. In the long-term we would like to add notifications for authors as a feature as well.
